Travelling with pets can be a wonderful experience, but it requires a bit of preparation
to ensure a smooth journey for you and your furry friend. Here’s some advice to
make travelling with your pet enjoyable and stress-free:
Before the Trip
1. Check the Rules and Requirements
Accommodations: Confirm that hotels, vacation rentals, or campsites are pet-
friendly and inquire about specific rules (e.g., leash policies, breed
restrictions, or additional fees).
Transportation: For air travel, check airline policies on pets, including crate
sizes and vaccination requirements. For road trips, verify pet rules for ferries
or trains, if applicable.
2. Visit the Vet
Ensure your pet is healthy and up-to-date on vaccinations.
Ask the vet for a copy of health records in case they are needed during your
travels.
Discuss travel-related health concerns, like motion sickness or anxiety, and
consider remedies or medications if necessary.
3. Pack for Your Pet
Here’s a packing checklist:
Food and treats (enough for the entire trip, plus extra).
A travel bowl for food and water.
Medications or supplements.
Collar with ID tags and leash.
A copy of vaccination records.
Pet carrier or crate (airline-approved if flying).
Familiar items like a blanket or toy for comfort.
Waste bags for cleanup.
Grooming supplies (brush, wipes, etc.).
4. Microchip and ID Tags
Ensure your pet is microchipped and has a collar with up-to-date ID tags, including
your phone number. Consider a GPS tracker for added safety.
During the Trip
1. Travel Safely
By Car:
Use a pet seatbelt, travel harness, or crate to keep your pet secure and
reduce distractions while driving.
Make frequent stops for bathroom breaks, water, and a chance to
stretch.
By Air:
Choose direct flights to minimize stress.
Acclimate your pet to their crate ahead of time so they feel safe in it.
2. Comfort is Key
Keep your pet hydrated throughout the trip.
Never leave your pet alone in a car, especially in extreme temperatures.
Make the environment as familiar as possible—bring their favourite toy, bed,
or blanket.
3. Be Patient
Pets might feel anxious in new environments. Give them time to adjust, and
offer extra attention and reassurance.
At Your Destination
1. Settle Them In
Allow your pet to explore the new space while keeping an eye out for hazards
(e.g., cords, open windows, or poisonous plants).
Establish a familiar routine for feeding and bathroom breaks.
2. Respect Local Rules
Follow leash laws, pick up after your pet, and be mindful of pet-restricted
areas.
3. Find Pet-Friendly Activities
Research parks, beaches, and attractions that allow pets.
Look for pet-friendly restaurants or cafes where you can enjoy meals together.
General Tips
1. Socialize Your Pet: Make sure your pet is comfortable around new people and
environments before travelling.
2. Test Short Trips: If your pet has never travelled, start with short trips to get
them used to it.
3. Emergency Planning: Identify nearby vets or animal hospitals at your
destination in case of an emergency.
